Temples, shrines and other "traditional cultural sites" aside, Kyoto is a modern city like any other in Japan, and in certain areas, large apartment complexes (danchi 団地) dot the sky line. This is in the Rakusai section of Nishikyo-ku.

Walk way to Koto-in 高洞院 within the precincts of Daitokuji 大徳寺. While not as famous as Daisen-in, this is one of my favorite places in northern Kyoto. Very quiet and unassuming sub-temple.
