Stone marker dedicated to Sugiyama Kengyo, a blind acupuncturist who attained great fame in the mid-Edo period. It appears Sugiyama went through a period of doubt over his skills. After a of ascetic practice in a cave on the seaward side of the island, and many prayers to the goddess Benzaiten (she represents cultural attainments, among other things), Sugiyama envisioned a way to perfect his medical practice. According to lore, he remained a patron of Benzaiten and the island's shrines until his death in 1694.

Many fortunes (imikuji おみくじ) tied to polls before the shrine. Visitors to such sites often offer 100 yen for a paper fortune. Once the fortune is read, one can leave it at the shrine by tying it to a tree branch, or in this case, wires put out especially for this purpose.

Ema are wooden plaques on which people will write their wishes. The images often reflect the shrine or temple where they are sold. In this case, Enoshima is associated with the quelling of a destructive dragon, hence the ema depicts such a creature. The wishes range from success in school exams to good health, safe child birth, and so on.
